Culture As I See It.

   I'm not much of an article writer,however this is an issue that has been on my mind ever since I witnessed arguments and diverse points of views during the course of a lecture. So today I want to address the topic of Globalization with emphasis on its effect on our Culture.

          Globalization can simply be said to be the process of the world becoming more interconnected. It's the gradual process of the world shrinking into one global village where every aspect of life be it religion, fashion, education, e.t.c. is almost uniform the world over.
      Now we all know that globalization has had a very great impact on the Nigerian culture, which is inevitable as we were colonised by Great Britain which made us something of a black annex of Britain. Aspects of our culture such as our mode of dressings, religion, and even our greetings has changed, now it is a subject of discussion if these changes are good or evil;foolishly imitated or imposed; and also if they can be changed or not.
      Now talking about culture, sociologists believe that Culture is the way of life of a people. They also posit that when cultures come in contact with one another there is inevitable borrowing from one culture to the other. However this borrowing is not wholesome as there are adaptation measures which these borrowed "concepts" must undergo before being blended into the other culture. Therefore I believe that the fact that Nigerians follow foreign culture is a function of the inevitability of borrowing from other cultures and not foolishly imitated as some people see it.
     Some people believe that the parts of foreign culture we copy are bad which is a fallcy. Culture is a way of life of a particular people and there is nothing like a good or bad culture. Culture is culture and cannot be assigned the quality of being good or bad. Anyone who sees the culture of another as being bad or inferior is guilty of ethnocentrism. Therefore when a Nigerian copies something from another culture, it's only bad because it is alien to our culture and not because the foreign culture is bad.
      On the issue of whether we should go back to our culture and abolish foreign culture. I believe this is almost impossible as culture is dynamic and changes overtime, I as a Yoruba boy grew up with the foreign way of dressing, and the Yoruba dressing on few occasions. The idea of imbibing foreign culture I believe is not bad. However we just need to filter it and take what is friendly to our culture
